A popular discussion I’m hearing among security professionals lately is the impact increased mobility is having on their organizations’ risk profiles, especially when it comes to potential security breaches, data loss and compliance issues. To deepen our end-user insights, HID Global commissioned a study to explore the trends for enterprise mobility. Here’s a quick snapshot of what we learned:
- 87% of enterprises have Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies
- 62% of US-based employees access company resources from a smart phone
- Nearly 20% of worldwide tablet purchases will be made by enterprises by 2017 (Forrester Research)
- More than 50% of organizations will have moved to cloud-based services by 2017 (Gartner)
It was immediately obvious that the increasing use of mobile devices to access information and applications from anywhere, anytime presents new challenges for IT departments. Existing authentication methods don’t mesh well with mobile devices. Originally designed for use with keyboards, current authentication methods are actually awkward and sometimes just not possible with mobile devices.
Mobile users want to maximize their productivity wherever they are. We've probably all experienced delays in waiting for a one-time password to be sent by e-mail or text; and then there's the time it takes to type in complex, case-sensitive passwords on a mobile device. That doesn’t fit the expectations for speed and convenience of mobility -- and the user experience invariably suffers.
At the same time, according to our 2015 study by HID Global and Tech Target, nearly half of the respondents of global IT professionals responded that the rise of mobility has significantly increased their risk for security breached and/or data loss.
To improve the user experience and increase security, HID Global is collaborating with Microsoft to enable secure, real-time authentication for mobility users.
As we reiterated in our press release that went public this week, HID Global’s ActivID Tap Authentication is tightly integrated with Windows Server 2012 R2 Active Directory Federation Services for secure access to Microsoft’s cloud-based Office 365 suite of applications. This is a major vote of confidence in HID Global’s “simply tap” solution.
This is how it makes life better:
- The card (or badge) you can use to open a door can also be used to secure cloud access from your computer − just as fast and efficiently as accessing doors at the office.
- IT managers no longer have to worry about issuing passwords or tokens every time someone needs to access the network.
- End-users can gain real-time access to Microsoft applications on a laptop, tablet or smart phone while the corporate network is protected from cyber attacks.
With a simple tap of a card, it’s now a reality that an employee can gain convenient access 24/7 to everything they need on an enterprise network – including thousands of cloud applications, data and web services – using the device of their choice without having to type in passwords or codes. Employees can easily access company documents so they can move from the office to home and all points in between.
