According to the research company RNCOS, India, the identity and access management (IAM) market is currently growing by some 13 percent annually.
The company also predicts that the EMEA region will account for more than 40 percent of the global market by 2013. There are several factors influencing this rapid growth, including increasing complexity of IT networks, growing awareness of security issues within companies - and the parallel requirement to efficiently manage identities, as well as the increasing need to comply with international regulations, to name but a few.

In physical access control, the key theme for us and our customers in the region is the migration from legacy technologies to future-proof 13.56 MHz technologies. Another focus area this year in EMEA will be in the authentication space of our Identity and Access Management business. Converged badge solutions or so called “common” access cards for both physical and logical access control are on the rise and are in demand more then ever from our installed customer base as well as new customers.
Our recently completed acquisition of ActivIDentity further strengthens our portfolio in authentication and gives our customers additional options when choosing the solution that best fits their needs.
In the secure card issuance area, the recently launched portfolio of FARGO® direct-to-card printers was an important milestone for us in EMEA, as we are now even better prepared to respond to the needs of a very competitive market. Together with our high definition printers, we are now in a position to offer an excellent range of desktop ID card printers to our customers and enable them to grow this business with us.
Finally, with many innovations on the horizon for 2011 we are on our way to position HID in EMEA as the clear leader in providing solutions for the delivery of secure identity.

For example, one of the latest products we use is HID’s Rijkspas, which was designed specifically for the Dutch market. As part of our partnership with HID Global, we jointly developed an efficient Rijkspas reader / access control solution based on DESFire EV1 13.56 MHz technology for government projects. By offering this solution together with HID, we are able to address all three factors of cost, convenience and security that government customers are mainly concerned with.
Customers and vendors alike will benefit from convergence and wireless applications
Advances in smart card technology itself can also help meet end customers’ needs while creating new business opportunities for vendors and their partners. An example of this is that today organizations can use the same credentials for logical access and physical access, where the end customer can benefit from this convergence by lowering their cost and increasing convenience for their users. Case in point: we recently completed a job where we supplied a large number of logical access readers from HID to an organization that has been a physical access customer for many years.
Another trend I see is in the wireless space. Most of the access control systems right now are wired, but I think that the industry should look into solutions for wireless applications, primarily due to costs. Much of the costs for access control are labour-related, such as wiring, mains supply and everything that is surrounds the product itself. Wireless solutions could create significant cost savings.
These trends of convergence and wireless implementation will not only create growth opportunities for all involved, but will also change the way we do business in the future.
In an Industry where safety and security is paramount, smart cards supporting multiple applications are allowing oil and gas companies to better safeguard staff and sites.
Oil and gas companies continue to innovate in smart card technology. Facing risks to the security of their assets and operations, these organizations are pioneering new approaches to identity and access management and IT security by combining physical and logical access onto a single smart card. This not only improves security and convenience for the staff, but also allows companies to realise the operational efficiencies that convergence delivers.
In the past, many oil and gas companies relied on multiple credentials and access control systems to fulfil different tasks, resulting in the proliferation of single-purpose systems running in parallel. In addition to being resource-intensive, disparate access control and security systems do not scale and can be costly to integrate.
A consolidated strategy is therefore crucial. Today, converged systems are employed to secure a wide range of sensitive oil and gas assets, including off-shore floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units; and on-shore production and transportation facilities such as pipelines, ports, and refineries.
Aside from hazardous materials and harsh working environments, numerous additional factors expose oil and gas companies to significant risk. The remoteness of sites, poor quality of local infrastructure, and geopolitical instability make installations susceptible to malicious attack, and a security breach has the potential to endanger staff, the local environment and, at worst, the stability of national energy grid infrastructures. In addition, these factors are magnified by the scale of the operations involved, as oil and gas fields can stretch thousands of kilometres.
There is no ‘one size fits all approach’ to smart card and IAM strategy in the oil and gas industry, and a host of factors surround specific vulnerabilities, the level and type of threats faced, and the physical environment. For users in the industry, the importance of strong security will only increase, given the value of data being stored and the need for a high level of physical access security to sensitive sites. Furthermore, convenience and efficiency are also crucial for companies managing thousands of staff - and these issues can be addressed effectively with a converged smart card strategy.
Early adopters of next-generation contactless payment technology will reap many benefits. But NFC may not be the best solution for all.
Nothing among today’s consumers is more ubiquitous than the mobile phone. 85 percent of Americans own cell phones, according to Pew Internet; for adults 18 to 29, cell phone ownership is 95 percent.
It’s no wonder that anticipation for the proliferation of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology is high. When a retailer or other organization enables cashless payments via mobile phone, they essentially place credentials conveniently at hand for 85 to 95 percent of their target consumers, with the potential to promote purchase frequency and customer loyalty. Per MasterCard, contactless cardholders made purchases with 26 percent greater frequency than regular cardholders. Further, the overall usage for contactless account holders increased by 24 percent.
MasterCard also reports that acceptance of contactless payments is expanding at a phenomenal pace. 265,000 merchant locations worldwide are accepting contactless transactions as of September 2010, up nearly 75 percent from 2009. However, while merchant acceptance is spreading rapidly, the penetration of mobile devices with NFC capabilities has been slow.
To enable more rapid penetration of contactless payments, HID Global has introduced the Contactless Payment and Identification Stickers. Placed on a mobile phone, the sticker delivers a user experience comparable to that of NFC programs, making it an excellent test case for those considering NFC.
In addition, there are a number of benefits these stickers provide, which NFC-enabled mobile devices cannot offer, including:
• Immediate availability. They can add timely impact to the introduction or expansion of your contactless payment program.
• Customized promotional messaging. Each sticker may be custom printed with your logo and promotional message, a visible reminder of the participant’s relationship with you.
• Adaptability. While I anticipate mobile phones to be a preferred vehicle for contactless credentials, many consumers may prefer to carry credentials elsewhere, such as on an MP3 player, in a wallet, or some place we haven’t even thought of yet. The sticker gives consumers the choice to place credentials where most convenient for them.
